Clinical Trials Research Nurse Coordinator

Summary

This position is for someone interested in joining a hands-on team with the MaineHealth Coastal Region Clinical Research division of MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) at MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital, Rockport, ME and requires a valid RN license. 

The MaineHealth Coastal Region Clinical Research Department coordinates a wide variety of research projects at any one or more of the Coastal Region hospitals (MaineHealth Waldo Hospital, MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital, MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital and MaineHealth Mid Coast Hospital) with the support of MHIR. These projects include industry-sponsored studies, grant-funded studies, NIH studies, as well as local investigator-initiated studies. The department works with all disciplines. Some travel between hospitals will be necessary. An onsite work schedule from our Rockport, Maine location is available for this position, with the opportunity for periodic remote chart review. 

The Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator may participate in any of the following, depending on the current study portfolio: 

  • Protocol development (for investigator-initiated studies) 
  • Study start-up 
  • Participant recruitment 
  • Study visit procedures (blood draws, administer surveys, etc.) 
  • Data entry 
  • Data abstraction 
  • Write-up and presentation of investigator-initiated studies

Faculty Scientist II or III

Summary

The Center for Interdisciplinary Population & Health Research (CIPHR) is recruiting a Principal Investigator to bring their research program to the MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) as a Faculty Scientist II (Associate Professor) or Faculty Scientist III (Full Professor). We are interested in a population health researcher whose focus is on social determinants/drivers of health, with preference for an investigator whose work aligns with cancer control or implementation science.  

MHIR is situated within MaineHealth, the largest hospital system in Maine, and provides unique opportunities to conduct research that is of benefit to patient and community populations, particularly among rural populations. MaineHealth provides preventive care, diagnosis and treatment to 1.1 million residents in Maine and New Hampshire through providers of primary care and numerous specialty care service lines, including two regional campuses of the MaineHealth Cancer Care Network.  

MHIR provides research infrastructure, including an Office of Grants Administration, an Office of Research Compliance, a Clinical Trials Office, and four independent research centers ranging from basic science and translational research to population health outcomes research. MHIR has a strong and growing annual grant portfolio, which will eclipse $25 million in extramural funding in 2025. Investigators at MHIR are highly collaborative and dedicated to improving the health of our patients and communities.  

The Center for Interdisciplinary Population and Health Research (CIPHR) is one of four research centers in MHIR. CIPHR designs, supports, and conducts innovative research and evaluations to improve population health. We focus on improving patient-centered outcomes, partnering with communities, addressing health disparities, educating, training & mentoring, implementing & evaluating evidence-informed interventions, and disseminating findings. Successful applicants will have an established record in mentoring trainees and early career investigators, and have a funded, transferrable research program that demonstrates current and future ability to secure NIH, PCORI, or other external funding. The Faculty Scientist II/III will have a unique opportunity to help build the scientific future and direction for MHIR and CIPHR, and we are seeking individuals who are eligible to apply for large center grants (e.g. NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence or P01) and have an entrepreneurial mindset around funding diversification for MHIR.

Faculty Scientist 

Summary

The MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR), established in 1991, has experienced remarkable growth, driven by successful grant funding and the recruitment of world-class scientists. The institute’s full service scientific facilities foster cutting-edge research with a particular focus on basic, translational science and population health. As a part of MaineHealth, the state’s largest integrated healthcare system, MHIR collaborates with the network of nine hospitals to enable a seamless connection between scientific discoveries and their real-world application in patient care and community engagement. MHIR has state of the art resources to support basic, translational and clinical research. These include, but are not limited to, twelve scientific cores, an AAALAC accredited rodent facility, data analytics, and grant and clinical research support. MHIR has a diverse multi-disciplinary pool of scientists including basic scientists, physician-investigators, epidemiologists, health services researchers, behavioral and social scientists, biostatisticians, and methodological (quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods) specialists. MHIR is strategically expanding to enhance its success in biomedical and health research. To support this expansion, we are actively seeking faculty candidates at various levels—Faculty Scientist I (Assistant Professor), Faculty Scientist II (Associate Professor), and Faculty Scientist III (Professor). Advanced degrees (MD, DO, PhD) are required for these positions which are expected to be filled over the next 6-18 months. Faculty Scientist II: should have obtained independent research funding and demonstrated a track record of peer reviewed publications and recognition in their field. Experience with teaching and mentorship of interns, students, trainees, and junior faculty is required. Contributions to the research community through service, education, and leadership are highly desired.

Faculty Scientist III: should have an established track record of research funding and national recognition in their field. They must have a consistent and active record of peer-reviewed publications and demonstrated experience and interest in mentoring early-career faculty and trainees. A well-rounded education/teaching portfolio is a plus. Successful candidates will also demonstrate excellent management skills, leadership, and mentorship, participating in institutional and national scientific service. Senior faculty recruits with expertise in clinical and translational science, as well as administrative leadership experience, have an opportunity to be considered for a leadership position at MHIR.

Manager- Clinical Trials

Summary

This position is for someone interested in joining a hands-on team at the MaineHealth Institute for Research, which, under the direction of the Director – Clinical Trials Office, will provide leadership and oversight for staff and non-oncology program development. The position is responsible for directing and supporting staff, managing program operations and resources, and contributing to the planning and implementation of the strategic vision for the Clinical Trials Office. This Manager will play a key role in expanding research initiatives in non-oncology areas, with a focus on building sustainable structures through research navigation and program development. This position will collaborate closely with the Director – as well as investigators across MaineHealth hospitals and clinics – to strengthen clinical research infrastructure, foster multidisciplinary engagement, and advance the growth and impact of the Clinical Trials Office.

Research Fellow – Pinz Lab

Summary

 

This position is for someone interested in joining the research team within the Pinz Laboratory at the MaineHealth Institute for Research, Scarborough, ME. This Research Fellow will conduct a variety of complex laboratory procedures and will be able to conduct research under the guidance of Principal Investigator, Ilka Pinz. This Research Fellow will have a sufficient level of experience, expertise and independence to conduct a defined research project, including project inception and design, implementation, and completion; with reporting of results in a peer-reviewed forum consisting of oral and written presentation. Research in the Pinz Laboratory is focused primarily on caveolae membrane microdomains and their role in cardiovascular health as well as the adipose tissue – heart signaling axis via the release of extracellular vesicles. Our research uses loss-of-function mouse models and mutant caveolin protein expression to investigate the role of caveolins in cardiac contractile function, insulin sensitivity, exosome uptake and diabetic cardiomyopathy. We collaborate with clinicians to investigate the role of caveolae in patients with cardiovascular disease. The successful applicant has knowledge of cell transfection with mutated proteins, cell culture, Western blotting, and protein extractions. Experience with mouse models is a plus but not required. Some aspects of this work will be performed in our outstanding core facilities, and the successful applicant is expected to collaborate and communicate with other team members to coordinate these efforts. Outstanding written and oral communication skills and attention to detail are expected.

Research Summer Intern

Summary

Research Interns in MaineHealth Institute for Research Summer Undergraduate Research Program (MHIR SURP) will have a unique opportunity to conduct research in diverse clinical and biomedical science fields during the summer months. During the ten-week program students participate in mentored research projects with faculty scientists and clinicians. Students also attend lectures and workshops featuring topics including bioethics, animal use in biomedical science and scientific presentation skills, as well as the opportunity to attend presentations by guest scientists and MHIR faculty.  Research Interns participate in projects with qualified mentors and staff. We help Interns understand scientific problems as well as give them opportunities for practical laboratory and/or clinical research experiences. Internships allow students to explore the practical aspects of biomedical research by participating in ongoing projects and observing or learning techniques. In addition, internships provide introduction to a network of research professionals to assist in the career development of the student.

The summer Intern program will run from June 1, 2026 – August 7, 2026 onsite in southern Maine.

Senior Director – Clinical Research

Summary

The Senior Director – Clinical Research will oversee the clinical arm of the research enterprise and act as a strategic liaison between MHIR and all of MaineHealth’s clinical departments. This individual will be instrumental in driving the growth and transformation of our clinical research programs, working closely with service line leaders to expand clinical trial activity across all departments, and fostering new partnerships with industry sponsors.

The Senior Director of Clinical Research will serve as the Principal Investigator for the Northern New England Clinical and Translational Research Network (NNE-CTR) grant, providing strategic oversight of its infrastructure and scientific direction. This role involves close collaboration with existing NNE-CTR administrative staff to manage grant deliverables, pilot programs, and support for junior investigators. In partnership with the Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), the Senior Director will lead the planning and submission of the next NNE-CTR renewal. Acting as the primary clinical liaison between the MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR) and MaineHealth clinical departments, the Senior Director will ensure alignment of research initiatives with clinical priorities. They will spearhead efforts to expand clinical trial activity across all departments and service lines, aiming for broad participation in trials. Additionally, the role supports the integration of Biobank resources, sample testing, and trial partnerships in collaboration with CAST, the Clinical Trials Office (CTO), and NorDx. The Senior Director will also contribute to research data governance, policy development, and long-term strategic planning for MHIR.
